PEN Prison & Justice Writing
Founded in 1971, the PEN Prison Writing Program believes in the restorative, rehabilitative and transformative possibilities of writing. PEN America’s Prison Writing Program has amplified the writing of thousands of imprisoned writers by providing free resources, skilled mentors, and audiences for their writing.
Their program supports free expression, and encourages the use of the written word as a legitimate form of power.
GreyBox created a graphic and type lockup to visually represent the writing program and fellowship that PEN America could use for promotion on their materials and to brand their program. We worked off a symbolic image of hands behind bars with a simple twist of integrating the bars and writing instruments. The uneven and simplistic illustrative style paired with the rough texture helped add depth and personality to the subject matter.
